When Qatar won the bid to host the 2022 World Cup, they became the first country to automatically qualify as hosts.
It is their first participation in the tournament, since they have never qualified for the World Cup finals.

Germany qualified for the tournament as the second team, after beating North Macedonia in October 2021 and topping Group J.

Denmark qualified in October with a 1-0 victory against Austria, securing their place as Group F victors.

Brazil were the first South American team to qualify by defeating Colombia 1-0, maintaining their position as the only country to have been in every World Cup final.

On the same day, Belgium was confirmed as the Group E winner, while France was declared as the Group D winner.

Croatia won Group H, defeating Russia 1-0 in a winner-takes-all match, while Spain won Group B.

Serbia, however, qualified for Group A at the cost of Portugal after defeating Cristiano Ronaldo and company in the last qualifier.

England qualified on November 15 with a convincing 10-0 win against San Marino, with Harry Kane scoring four goals.

Switzerland qualified for the World Cup on the same day as Group C champions, ahead of Italy.

The Netherlands earned the last play-off position in Qatar with a 2-0 victory against Norway on November 16.

Argentina qualified in the evening after a draw with Brazil and a loss to Ecuador by Chile.

Iran and South Korea qualified for 2022 as the top two teams in Group A in the third round of AFC qualification.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has four or five teams* participate in the World Cup finals.

CAF (Africa) has five teams, whereas CONCACAF (North, Central America, and the Caribbean) has three or four.

CONEMBOL (South America) has four or five competitive teams.

UEFA (Europe) has the most qualified teams, with 13 slots.

OFC (Oceania) has 0 or 1 slot.

*At the conclusion of the qualifying process, inter-confederation play-offs are held to decide how many teams from each confederation will compete in the 2022 finals.

A total of 32 teams will compete in the competition.
